Belur, also known as the Banaras of the South, “Dakshin Varanasi” is a town in Hassan district in the state of Karnataka, India. Belur is situated on the banks of river Yagachi, 38 km from Hassan. Belur was the erstwhile capital of the Hoysalas. Belur is a cultural extravaganza and is renowned for its Chennakeshava temple, one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. The temple was built by Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana to mark his victories in 1116 AD against the Cholas. 17 km away is another splendid attraction of Halebid which was the Hoysala capital before Belur.
